Rigorous Infection Control Guidelines Drive Demand for Specialized Catheters
According to a new report by Millennium Research Group (MRG), the US markets for anti-infective Foley catheter strips and trays will generate revenues in excess of $80 million by 2010, making them the fastest-growing segments of the urinary catheter market.
November 16, 2005 -- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent the most common nosocomial infections developed by patients in hospitals and extended-care facilities, affecting an astounding 1 million individuals per year. The development of catheters impregnated with anti-infective solutions, designed to prevent the adherence of microorganisms, has been one of the most significant advances toward the prevention of CAUTIs since the adoption of closed urine drainage systems. According to a new report by Millennium Research Group (MRG), the US markets for anti-infective Foley catheter strips and trays will generate revenues in excess of $80 million by 2010, making them the fastest-growing segments of the urinary catheter market.
Many hospitals have adopted stringent infection control guidelines to reduce additional costs associated with treating nosocomial infections, thus driving demand for anti-infective catheters. Despite being more expensive than latex or silicone Foley catheters, studies have shown that anti-infective catheters can save health care institutions upwards of $6,000 per 100 catheters. In addition, widespread marketing efforts by companies that offer anti-infective catheters, such as C.R. Bard and Kendall Healthcare, will drive revenues in this market by raising awareness about the benefits of anti-infective Foley catheters among health care professionals.
MRG’s upcoming US Markets for Urological Devices 2006 will include coverage of over 30 competitors in the urinary incontinence, stone management, nephrostomy, urological endoscope, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction markets. Some of the major companies covered include C.R. Bard (BCR), American Medical Systems (AMMD), Mentor Corporation (MNT), Boston Scientific (BSX), and Cook Urological.
